We use AI to Monitor Censorship and Expand Free Speech

Our Impact

At GreatFire.org, we leverage cutting-edge Chinese and Western artificial intelligence to fight censorship at scale. Our systems continuously monitor, analyze, and circumvent censorship mechanisms worldwide. Censorship authorities use AI to monitor and censor content - we use it to identify what those topics may be. The censors use AI to block access to information - we use it to find holes in their systems.

About Us

We are a China-based anti-censorship organization founded in 2011. We actively respond to and challenge censorship by the Chinese authorities. We operate several innovative projects that tackle various aspects of the censorship apparatus, many of which have utility not just in China but in other parts of the world. Our work is has been referenced in hundreds of academic studies and our data is frequently cited in major news stories. The Chinese authorities recognize the importance of our work and have tried, unsuccessfully, to disrupt our operations with unprecedented cyberattacks.
